Northern Women

With cold weather upon us you've probably unpacked old winter coats and maybe thought, as you stuffed them into your closet, "yuk, these old things." Or perhaps you're like Mazza and your coat had an unfortunate run-in with a glue gun. Either way, it's time to buy a new one. I took Mazza to Square One in Manhattan Mall for a $69.99 Donnybrook coat, hood, toggles and all (right).

Mazza's a student and on a tight budget. She walks around the city a lot and needs something to block out that wind off the river. We went for practical; this coat has sweater cuffs and a sweater mock neck that zips up tight. But this other Donnybrook gave us good reason to pause (left); it has nice modern lines and is also just $69.99. We chose the toggle coat as the length was better.

Besides a plethora of Esprit and Kenneth Cole wool coats, from $69.99 - $89.99, there's a good selection of down jackets which run a little higher. A cute, mid-thigh, belted Baby Phat in grey is $129.99. Square One seems to be a good outlet for students and the rest of us on a budget.

Macy's Veteran's Day sale is on; I'll drop by this morning and will post if there's a great coat deal in Herald Square. Online the discounts look substantial.

*Bonus Bitten: Dragged Mazza up to Steve and Barry's where she bought this waffle henley sweater (right) and a basic black crew sweater, both by Bitten, both $19.98. Does she know Bitten is by SJP? Well, what she doesn't know...
