Pin and Grow

Is there something amiss in the universe? Because I went for a haircut and my stylist DIDN'T cut my hair. Instead, after coloring and washing it, she looked in the mirror and said, "Let's not cut it." I then woke up and almost fell off my chair (getting my hair done makes me super sleepy).

The woman who has been cutting my hair short for more than eight years wants me to grow it long for fall. If you're thinking "But it's your hair, do what you want," you're wrong. It's actually her hair and I'm just here on earth modeling it for her.

Problem is, I have an ornery side thanks to an aggressive colic. Blow dry, flat iron, give sacrifice, nothing works. By noontime it will be doing what it wants, which is usually the flip.

Solution? Bobby pins. I just twist up sections of hair in the back and pin them down, then make it soft by pulling some pieces along the ears. If the top looks flat I slightly tease some bits. Bonus is, all that hair is off my neck so I'm much cooler. And later, when you take the pins out, you'll have some pretty waves. More pinning = more waving. Do I care what it looks like in the back? Uh, no, because a: "out of sight..." and b: I'm at work, people, not the disco.

Sometimes I add one of these:

You get two for $3.90 at H&M. I got the grey and black. Simple and not very exciting but I look ridiculous in those Blair Waldorf headbands. These won't give you a headache until about 3pm.

While you're picking up bobby pins, spend another $7.99 on Citre Shine to keep your hair smooth in the summer heat. It coats your hair and doesn't look greasy. I've used this off and on for years. But honestly, lately I don't use much product as I've been liking a soft, messy look. You know, I'm prepping for that sexy long hair come fall.

I can really understand your feelings now... the first stage of growing hair is not that easy or comfy! However, the result maybe worthy it! The change of hair style can be really cool!

P.S. I really didn't mean to wear Louboutin to pick strawberries, that's pure coincident...

Hmmm, I usually grow mine out...then cut it all off again. I always foget (when I decide to grow it again) that long hair means ironing the kinks out on a daily basis

Why is it that I obviously have curly hair and everytime I get it cut, the stylist blows it out straight? Don't they know that I have no patience, and no extra octopus arms, to do this at home???
I mix so many hair products that a toxic cloud forms when I blowdry.
Someday I'll embrace my curls, but I like your bobby pin idea. Unfortunately, the fussy pampered pet owners in Boca might not appreciate that look....unless they are Coach bobby pins with Swarovski inlays.

I like planning hairdos a few months in advance. At least I'm planning SOMETHING.

Godspeed with your journey. Seriously, the urge to cut gets SO EFFING STRONG when it first starts getting crazy. But then, I had never thought of your genius bobby pin idea. Also, the few times I unsuccessfully tried to grow my hair out, nobody told me to skip washing it a few nights a week, so my super fine hair kept getting split and ratty. I think you'll have more luck though, your hair already looks full and healthy and stuff.

TOG: don't ruin it for me, I'm living vicariously so you have to wear Louboutins everywhere!
Xmastime: welcome to 2008!
Bowerbird: i totally agree, this is why mine has almost always been short for the past decade
Maria: you have the most gorgeous curly hair, WHY do they want to spend an hour blowing it dry????
wendyb: no way! I don't believe you! do you practice? have your stylist show you?
Cammila: b/c you have my favorite short hair of all time, i know you understand - my stylist tells everyone not to wash it every day, it's her mantra! and thanks, but my hair is thinner than it looks.

Too funny about the stylist not wanting to actually cut your hair! I used to use citre shine and kind of forgot it existed...I think I want to run to Target and rediscover.

I dream about long and beautiful hair ))) But my own is not long and not ideal at all (((

Hugs from Angel.

I wish I had a hairdresser who told me what to do. Normally I have to tell them and then it gets all screwed up. And it's my fault. Oh those headband headaches... don't even get me started...

iyf: let me know if you want her email, she's in Chinatown and has no problem taking care of all the decision making!

I can relate: my hair does exactly what it wants to at all times, no matter now much coaxing I do.
