The Man Bag

George got a lovely man-bag at Fossil a few weeks ago. Oops, should not say "lovely" when talking about men's bags. But still, it's very pretty. I mean handsome.

Looks like you can put a lot inside. George likes it for his laptop. It's also got that handy little outside pocket, good for keys and subway cards.

Although it is quite large. Have you noticed us girls now have some competition on the subways? With the emergence of the man bag and its popularity, men no longer exclusively carry the compact briefcase that is set on the ground between the legs. No, now we've got shoulder room competition with ensuing glares. All the more reason for us girls to visit Fossil on 34th Street and buy him a nice, small man bag for him to sling around on subway cars. Besides, today is the debut of Fossil's new line of shoes in-store, so you can also check out all those cute new shoes IRL.

Fossil, 38 W. 34th between 5th & 6th

A man bag has to have a strap or it is just too creepy. Clutches for men are just a little too much for my eye. But, I have pretty conservative taste in men's wear. I am a little right of Brooks Brothers.;-)

Hi there-I agree, a handsome bag indeed-it looks like it will last a very long time too!

I third that motion. A man should never carry a clutch. But THIS bag that George has nabbed? Awesome.

I love a good man bag. I just got one from Tumi for Paul last month.

That's basically the best way for a guy to carry a man-bag. A nice old school leather shoulder bag looks great. Makes me wonder why so many guys wear awful, square little awkward murses.

I love the man bag! I'm happy it's become more mainstream because I have no idea how men can make it through life without having some kind of thing you can throw everything in. How can they just leave the house with a wallet in their back pocket? They're insane!

I've just pinched Mr MDS's man bag which I bought him! It's very handy and great to use.

What a COINCIDENCE (and it is!!) that the author of this blog entry wrote about the "Man Bags" on the exact same day - and 1.5 hours earlier - than I wrote MY blog entry on the same topic, "The European "Man Bag" Carry All"!

Yours was Posted by fashion herald at 12:06 PM - which is 6:06pm Madrid, Spain time. Mine was posted By MadridMan on August 10, 2009 7:38 PM local time (or 1:38pm New York City time). Just wanted to clear that up for both of us and our readers.

I guess great minds really do think alike!

Here in Spain the "Man Bags" are as common as purses carried by women. Our bags tend to be smaller than theirs - and even smaller than the Fossil brand you show in your entry - but they're no less useful.

Some of my American buddies in the Midwest have told me, more than once, "If you wear that thing back here I won't be seen walking with you!" Seems they'd much rather be bulging at all pockets with their mobile phones, wallets, keys (ouch!), coins, glasses, and whatever else they need.

And do you want to hear something REALLY terrible? In Spain and in Spanish, these bags are commonly and crudely referred to as "mariconeras" - or "fag bags" because no self-respecting macho-man would carry a purse!! ARGH!! (insert rolling-eyes graphic here)

Saludos, MadridMan

This post was written two years ago and it's fair to say the man bag has become mainstream! With its popularity comes many beautiful and classic designs that are in no means womanly. If you're thinking about buying a man bag, I suggest investing in a quality one in a classic design.
