Back to School Block Party at Herald Square

Here's a good Fashion Week reprieve: It's all about the family this weekend in Herald Square. Saturday and Sunday are chock full of free activities for the kids from 10am - 6pm. Presented by Buick Lacrosse (you'll be able to view the car at the tip of Herald Square), be sure to stop by 34th & Broadway for facepainting, storytelling, clown performances from the highly entertaining Hey Ya Brothers, and even tai chi and salsa lessons for the adults. All this for free on both days in front of Macy's Square. Below is a more detailed schedule:

  • 3-D chalk drawing by Kurt Wenner. A photographer will be present to take your photo with the drawing (both days);
  • Facepainting by Magin & Torey Schantz (both days);
  • Tai Chi lessons at 10:00am (both days);
  • Storytelling by Daniel Kitrosser at noon & 1pm on Saturday, & Alan Katz at noon on Sunday (times subject to change);
  • Hula Hooping lessons by Sheryl Wilson on Saturday at 2:00pm;
  • Hey Ya Brothers clown performance at 3pm (both days);
  • Salsa dancing lessons by Stepping Out Studios at 4pm, followed by a salsa dancing free session at 5pm (both days).
And don't be surprised if you see a marionette performance on Sunday, and some appearances from very special Scholastic characters. I don't want to give it away, but think "big, red dog." Scholastic will also be hosting arts and crafts and selling books. Lots and lots to do for kids and adults alike. And while you're down on 34th Street, be sure to drop by the stores to beef up the back-to-school wardrobes. American Eagle is having a sale on their plaids, and Aeropostale jeans are now under $25.

Enjoy your weekend, be it full of family fun, or Fashion Week madness (coverage resumes this weekend).
