Fashion Week Day Three, Part I: Ruffian, Son Jung Wan, and Mara Hoffman

Ruffian

The self-described ‘sober religious silhouettes – with lavish sumptuousness’ shown on the Ruffian runway were regal and feminine. Full skirts and voluminous sleeves were balanced by tailored shapes with precise seaming, and accessorized with bold red stockings and headwear that can only be described as lamp shade hats. Designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais experimented with high necklines and collars, my favorite being the gathered and pleated rendition spotted on the red stockings, red coat, red lip look that was second-to-last in the show’s lineup. My recommendation for fall? Add one of Ruffian’s cropped, wide-sleeve jackets to your winter wardrobe.

Son Jung Wan

At Son Jung Wan, we see gold everywhere – from stripes on cream leggings, lapels on men’s coats, to glittery gold lips. Gold is definitely a major trend for Fall 2014, especially to accent creamy winter whites. Son's collection was beautifully styled: models had fresh faces with neutral eyes and dramatic lips, and their hair was pulled back to messy buns donned with golden chopsticks – a symbol of the designer’s Korean roots. Luxurious fur coats were shown both in their natural colors and dyed in vibrant blue and hazelnut tones, while standout, multi-colored sequin pieces were mixed playfully into the runway lineup. There is an incredible sense of movement in Son's collection, with coats and dresses perfectly tailored to be both flattering and fluid.

Mara Hoffman

There wasn't a pattern I didn't fall in love with in Mara Hoffman's Fall 2014 collection. Inspired by the landscape, art, and textiles of North Africa, specifically Moroccan rugs, Egyptian camels, and jewelry, the collection was full of vibrant colors and bold prints. Incorporating more black than we have previously seen from Hoffman, the colors came alive against the dark fabrics. Aside from her ever-gorgeous bohemian maxis and caftans, there were a number of beautiful coats, trousers, and an adorable double camel sweater for the mild minimalist. I also loved the simplicity of the solid black jumpsuit with a pyramid-cut neck line. The impressive finale caftan piece (top right) with matching headpiece had thousands of seed beads meticulously sewn in. Overall, a beautiful play on textures with sequins, fringe, and bead work, all paired with simple yet striking gold accessories.
