Rafael Cennamo Fall '12 Collection

Although I kind of love the fabric on this one. Maybe it's the crown of thorns look that's pushing it to "prom?" I'm a big fan of the grey hair (wigs and real) seen on the runways this season. Cennamo's models had grey color sprayed on top of the model's hair, and I loved that look, too. It added a demented feel to the prom-like dresses, so perhaps I'm now a bigger fan of Cennamo's prom look than when I started this post? Going gray myself, and dreaming of the day that I just dye it all grey for a Kristen McMenamy look, I wholly support this graying trend. And Cennamo for fall? Yes for the prom and yes for everything else.

Emilio Cavallini Fall 2012

Nancy, our new social media assistant, reports on the Emilio Cavallini Fall '12 presentation.

In this rather peculiar and provocative presentation, with half naked models getting dressed on the end of the staged area, Emilio Cavallini demonstrated how to wear his stockings.

As the show commenced, each pair proved to be more gorgeous than the last .

In addition to the live presentation, a video played of a indecisive model trying on and taking off at least 50 pairs of stockings. Who knew stockings had such infinite possibilities?

Sexy or sophisticated, romantic vines or lace, these stockings really help define your outfit.

Bonus perk: I received my own pair of Emilio Cavallini stockings upon leaving. I'm excited to transform an old outfit with a completely new look for my legs!

Ruffian Fall '12

I'd like to blame missing the Ruffian show by mere minutes on the MTA's weekend schedule, but I should have known better. Now that I live in Queens, or "the Suburbs" to New Yorkers who don't live in Queens (which is, AHEM, New York City, people), I have to adjust to crazy slow weekend trains. Duly noted. Now let's pretend I was at, what I heard one veteran show-goer call, "The best show of the season yet." And not out in the Fashion Cafe in the lobby all sweaty and out-of-breath and gulping coffee.

The jacket above is my favorite piece, a standout style for a girl's wardrobe. How about this cropped, cinched waist, and baggy pant silhouette, do you like?

Last season Ruffian was all about its namesake, the thoroughbred filly. And this year the theme still feels horsey, but more refined, country-living, "shall we go on a foxhunt?" horsey. Sunday I tweeted from the Lela Rose show "is Lela a Downton Abbey fan?" and I would ask the same here. At Lela it was the beaded gowns and at Ruffian it's the crisply tailored suits and lush fabrics.

I loved the coats at Jill Stuart that hit right above the knee, and I'm really loving these longer coats that hit mid-calf.

At first I was "meh" on the dress, but then looked closer: the tailoring is divine. How perfect are the shoulders? Again, at New York Fashion Week, Ruffian has put together a gorgeous show with a strong cohesive theme, which sounds so dull but on Ruffian's runway is pure excitement.

Jill Stuart Fall '12 Show

Jill Stuart's show Saturday morning at Lincoln Center struck me as serene and centered, even with what sounded like the discordant Violent Femmes introducing the first looks.

Maybe I felt serene because everything about this look is so right. The skirt and coat length, the calf-high patent boots, the hard, horizontal black strips of fabric, epitomized Jill Stuart's direction for fall.

There were lovely prints, typical of Stuart, but more sophisticated for fall. The purples were beautiful rose-colored hues, don't you think?

Although most think girly and prints when they think Jill Stuart, this collection was all about the slim dresses and coats hitting just above the knee, and the mod calf boots (just enough '60's mod in this show to make it hip). Other personal standouts were the opening black and winter white prints, and the accents of black strips acting as geometric lines that felt at once a little S&M and a little hard abstraction. Loved this show.

I had a great time attending "A Design Event" at the new H.H. Brown showroom near Times Square Wednesday night. The event was sponsored by DSW with FIT to launch a design competition in celebration of new DSW store openings in New York City. The winning design will be produced and sold at DSW's New York City stores and online.

There was no shortage of inspiration in the 21,000-square foot show room filled to the brim with shoes. My favorite? The velvet bootie with wide ribbon laces below: scrumptious!

Say Hi to the New Dogs in Town

The Super Bowl, Fall Fashion Week, and now the Westminster Dog Show. I love February in New York.

The Finnish Lapphund, Myles, walking across Seventh with his owner. The dogs were much better behaved then all us people crowding around to take pictures, of course.

Before fashion week officially starts, I'd like to pay homage to the new dogs in town. Above are several of the six new breeds walking across Seventh Avenue, aka Fashion Ave, near the welcoming arms of Madison Square Garden, the Westminster venue. Naturally, these aren't "new" breeds but they are new to Westminster. Click here for a list of all six. Hickory, a Scottish Deerhound and last year's Best in Show, led the new dogs across the street.

OMG, the Cesky Terrier, Katrina, what a doll!

The Xoloitzcuintli, Alma Dulce. I'm going to call her breed the XO. Hairless, chic with the jewels, and fabulous in interviews.

And now a little photo montage of my favorite, the Norwegian Lundehund, aka the Puffin Dog as the Norwegians used them to hunt puffin birds in rocky cliffs. It's the facial expression that kills me.

The Lundehund, Eowyn, with her owner Harvey Sanderson: So chill, so well-tempered, and I just love the face. She reminds me of my cute but evil cat. I think they'd make a great team. Her owner said the Lundehund makes an excellent apartment pet.

Don't freak: this was like second nature to Eowyn. Harvey is showing that she's got six toes and is double-jointed. Also, she can bend her head backwards along her spine. This is all to help her hunt vertically. Flexible and cute, she's awfully versatile. In the background is the American English Coonhound, what a beauty.

A rare perked ears shot. Her owner says when the ears are down she's bored, which was the case through most of the press conference. Attitude, I like it.

Return next week for more dog news, as I'll be reporting from Westminster Monday and Tuesday, in between the other fashion shows.

We Are the Champions! Now Go Get the Gear

Most likely, as I hit publish, the last official Superbowl champion hat is being rung up at Modell's in Herald Center. But they're still available online, and staff said there are lots of T-shirts available in store. You can also check Foot Locker on 34th Street for the champion hats, as they are only carrying the hats so you may get lucky there. Here's what I like from the cornucopia of Super Bowl gear:

Regarding those pajama pants: I've been talking about sleepwear a lot lately. Perhaps I need to do a personal ban on pj's blogging. Or my toddler needs to not wake up every night at 3am asking for cereal.

Esprit Closing: It's Not "Goodbye," It's "Hope to See You Later"

Word hit the streets yesterday that Esprit is planning to close all of its North American stores. I read the news this afternoon while shopping Esprit on 34th Street. Seriously, I'm not joking. I was in the store checking my iPhone and got an email from Intern Craig. Really, he should be on the payroll, he's always keeping me in touch.

Oddly I had just been thinking that the current sale (50% off the entire store) felt a little sad (see signage above). But I like to look on the good side: Esprit is regrouping, hiring new designers in Europe, and is rediscovering its "soul." I'm kind of freelancing on the latter, as that's what I want Esprit to do. Perhaps it'll be back in the future with its awesome, old-school-Esprit image intact. It's a Rock Festival Summer at American Eagle Outfitters

From the AEO Summer '12 press preview last week.

I'm pretty sure that back when I went to rock festivals all (2) of my bras were concert bras. Torn black T's with black bras underneath and those awful black denim shorts was a big grunge look. So naturally I'm a big fan of Concert Bra. I'll totally try to get away with it for summer '12 beach weekends with the yellow bra from the press bag. My daughter's too young to be embarrassed by her mom's dressing yet so I need to enjoy these years.

American Eagle Outfitters Concert Bra girl is definitely less grunge and more fun with lighter colors, girlish layers, cute sandals, and adorable printed bags.

Also in the press bag? World's most cozy terry hoodie. I HAD NO IDEA AEO hoodies felt like this. Intern Craig (whose arm is in a shot above) has been holding back (although not really, he bugs me about AEO's fabulousness all the time. Also, his friends are devoted to Aerie). I wore the hoodie all weekend and slept in it twice. I have this thing about sleeping in really comfortable normal clothes, I find it oddly decadent. If I'm wildly rich someday I'll buy cashmere jumpsuits to nap in all winter, because when Intern Craig and I are wildly rich we're moving to Minnesota.

The New jcpenney: A Lot More than a Lowercase "J"

I find this new logo oddly soothing.

I'm not going to rehash here all the changes going on at jcpenney that you can read about everywhere, including here, here, and here. Instead, I'll talk about buying leggings there yesterday.

The sweater on the left is a.n.a. The I Heart Ronson leggings and boucle jacket are on the right.

I stopped by jcpenney Manhattan Mall to check out the mood of the store while the big rally was going on elsewhere. The store was buzzing with talk and energy. I think retail department CEOs should dress in drag (or incognito, if they are female) and spend a morning in the women's dressing rooms. This will give him/her some interesting perspective. It's one my favorite things about the job, listening to retail staff chatter.

While eavesdropping I tried on a lot of a.n.a, thinking I'd do a cute "A New Approach" story as that's what "a.n.a" stands for. But only the sweater (above) looked OK on me, so I moved on to the I Heart Ronson. That boucle cropped jacket is even better looking in person, and it's $30. The leggings are $10. Both are red tag items, which in the new pricing scheme means that's the everyday price.

When I saw the leggings on the rack and the $10 price, I thought "That's exactly what I would pay for these leggings." I tried them on and thought "Perfect for $10." I then bought them. I didn't for a second think "I'm going to wait till these go on sale." Don't laugh when I say this, but I felt like I had just experienced an honest, straightforward retail transaction. And I felt relieved. Finally, no more sale tags.

These leggings make me think Ron Johnson is really on to something. You?

The Brits Invade 34th Street: Kate Moss for Mango

Yesterday it was smart British actor Max Irons, and today it's smart British supermodel Kate Moss. I'm all Anglo this week. Don't worry, tomorrow I'm getting all American again with JCPenney and Ron Johnson.

But for now, let's enjoy Kate Moss as the new face of Mango. If you haven't visited the new store on 34th Street, get there soon to catch the end of the winter sale with items 50% - 70% off.

So very Kate, so very pretty. But the one of the left is PERFECTION. As I tweeted yesterday, that needs to be my spring uniform. I'm buying every last bit, and I almost never do that.

Uniqlo Jeans Winner! And Belly Video

Speaking of women, I saw this video by Margaret Lazarus over the weekend and have not been able to get it out of my head since. I'll be honest and frank: this video kind of grossed me out. My post-baby belly resembles much of the below. But I couldn't stop watching, and have since been viewing my belly in a totally different way. No, I don't love it, but I'm thinking perhaps it's time to embrace my flawed mid-section: the c-section scar the nurses raved about, the odd cellulite and excess skin that is no way mine and I will continue to subject to yoga, and the duo of holes in my belly, remains of the trial I went through to conceive. What do you think, can you embrace your flaws as an important story about yourself?

I was pretty knocked out by the new Joe Fresh styles today on 34th Street. There's an irresistible nautical section up front. Also, they've got an awesome pair of orange rainboots. My boss has outlawed the use of "awesome" in the office, and rightly so, but the first thing I thought when I saw construction orange rainboots was "awesome." I'm pushing for a ban of "actually" next.

Can you see the side-stripe on the wide-leg jeans? That sweater below is from winter, and is on sale for $49.

I'm really annoyed with my Hayden Harnett bag for falling apart after three years, but I guess I should have known when the hardware on an outside pocket fell off the first week I wore it.

So I've been looking a little closer at bags these days, wondering what the heck I'm going to carry for New York Fashion Week. Daffy's had a few impressive choices that I'm considering, as my Birkin bag most likely won't be making it from Paris in time (joking, joking, and *wish*).

This might be the best casual "sporty" bag I've seen yet. Gym clothes, overnighter, love this.

Almost Extinct: Old Wool Sweaters

I'll be announcing the Uniqlo jeans giveaway post-Google et.al blackout (updated to add: no Google blackout, look for their protest note). In the meantime, please enjoy a little weekend DIY project I was forced into during a trip I made with a sister this past weekend to my mom's in Iowa.

First, right off the airplane, we scoured Goodwill for old wool sweaters. I thought, "No problem, Goodwill in Des Moines, Iowa, will be packed full of wool sweaters." Guess what? WRONG. The DIYrs have taken command of all secondhand stores in Iowa. Wool sweaters, beware: you will be pillaged, felted, and remade into pillows, gloves, and, as in our case, toddler blankets:

This idea came from my sister, who found it in a magazine ages ago. Here's the deal: stakeout your Goodwill/Salvation Army and use your sample sale shopping skills to snatch those sweaters out of your fellow DIYr's arms. I'm hardly joking as I practically had to drag my own mom away from a fellow shopper's cart that boasted a particularly fine specimen of men's wool sweater. Be sure to heed this important sweater picking detail: buy sweaters that are at least 70% wool. They need to felt up so they've got to be mostly wool. Now go home, revive yourself with caffeine or wine, depending on the hour, and get started.

First, wash those sweaters in hot water, preferably in a machine that agitates. I didn't really understand this part as I thought all machines agitated, but I've guess there's been a lot of changes in washing machine technology since I've lived in a house with a washing machine. Next put those sweaters in the dryer on the hottest cycle possible. Basically do everything you've been told not to do with wool.

When they're dry, cut them into squares using a uniform guide. We put down sandpaper with adhesive to help keep the square in place as we cut (see above), but we didn't get rough enough sandpaper. Go for the really scratchy stuff.

Then lay out those squares and decide on a pattern. When you're with family, this will take a while. You'll argue about keeping the argyle and lavender squares in a neat diagonal pattern, you'll fight about whether or not to use the grey plaid, and then, finally, you'll all decide to make it bigger. So there goes the perfect diagonal pattern you fought for so dearly. After this grueling decision-making process, pin the squares in strips (but don't pin the strips together yet). Next, watch Downton Abbey online for about four hours and go to bed.

The next day you go buy the rest of your supplies, namely a nice cotton backing for the squares and a pretty patterned material for the back of the blanket. Joanne's in Des Moines was a great resource for this until we got stuck behind a couple of scrapbookers at checkout who were buying about 3,000 sheets of paper that had to be rung up one by one. Damn those scrapbookers. Also, what the hell is scrapbooking?

I'd tell you what to do next but we had a sewing machine malfunction which hindered the completion of our blanket. Instead we traded photos of our squares with another sister on the East Coast, who was also working on a blanket and had a plethora of perfectly square blocks (ours, not so much). She also had a plethora of sweater pillows she had finished, most likely while we were watching Downton Abbey or sleeping. She's the truly talented and dedicated DIYr in the family. Probably, as I'm typing, she's finishing our blanket for us. If you have any questions about this project, please leave them in comments and I'll email the sister whose husband is now plotting to throw away pillows.

Here's a good reason to blather on again about Desigual by Lacroix: it's on sale. Also there's the logo, below. Surely it's one of the best designer collab logos ever.

Don't you love a brand video? "Here I am, lounging about the couch with me, we both look colorful and fabulous." This coat that I adore is $122 (the photo doesn't really do it justice, it's better IRL). Sadly, these pants I so admire aren't discounted as much, but still, they're on sale.

I saw a few pairs of the yellow print leggings at the Fifth Avenue and 34th Street store before the holidays, so you may get lucky with them. I love mine, they scream Lacroix and that makes me very happy. *Le Sigh* LACROIX.

It's finally winter here in New York, so that means it's time for a Billabong visit. Nothing like a surf and skate shop visit to warm a girl up.

Although there's a lot to look at on the first floor of Billabong on 34th Street, I love a trip to the second floor where the Element clothing lives. Sure, this is a skate brand, but Element's styles for women cross over a lot of boundaries. Striped tanks, asymmetrical dresses, cropped shirts, perfect wraps, yes, they all appeal to a mom who lives and works in the city, falls off skate and surf boards, and prefers chic, comfortable clothing that she can layer weekends and weekdays alike. Who doesn't?

It's That Gap Time of Year

I love this time of year at Gap Herald Square. I get a good preview of their cuteness for spring:

Soft lace-up oxfords: while navy is perfect for spring nautical stripes, I would not pass on that fuchsia, no way no how.

But I can still bask in the savings of their winter sales.

Sale items today were an extra 40% off: cuff boots were $35.99, patent heels were $23.99.

When I first saw those soft, lace-up oxfords in store, I thought about how often I get compliments on my Gap boots. I know it's in the press these days about Gap losing its way, but this doesn't translate to me when I shop their shoes. Also, my sister just stole my wide-leg 1969 jeans from me. Don't let all the press fool you: Gap designers hit home runs on a regular basis.

Since I'm still off work today for the holidays, I'm just showing a shot of my new favorite must-have: the H&M Divided one-piece jumpsuit. This may also be known as a playsuit, bodysuit, or pajamas. Hopefully I am, right now, wearing this on the couch as Grandma entertains Baby Herald. As there is another 3-day holiday winter weekend on the near horizon, I recommend going now to H&M as I bought this just last Thursday. Happy lounging.

The Best Gaming Resource in Midtown: The Compleat Strategist

Instead of a big list of best, last-minute holiday shopping on 34th Street, I'm mentioning just one awesome gift resource: The Compleat Strategist.

The Compleat Strategist is, on first glance, a hardcore gaming shop for the Dungeons & Dragons set. Do not let the dragons fool you.

There is a huge selection of the classics, and big set ups for chess and poker sets. Now, that's not to say you won't find a lot of stuff like "Gale Force Nine hobby tools" and fantasy role playing board games, but that's the beauty of it. Shopping The Compleat Strategist is a total adventure, because it's packed full of fascinating games you've never seen before. A lot of them seem to come from Germany.

A lot of unusual board games...

And a lot of classics.

Here's what I did, and you should too: tell the clerk exactly who you are shopping for. "I need a game for three boys, 9 and under, who love Legos, Star Wars, and Legos. Their basement is one big Lego set, and they have Star Wars wallpaper in their bathroom."

The clerk took me immediately to this:

"Carcassonne." It's a board game involving tiles, "meeples," and yes, it's German. I don't get it yet but I'm totally going to geek out on it with my nephews after Christmas. And I'm really excited to introduce them to something new and challenging, a game of strategy on a whole different level.

Excellent service, crazy-whack product you're not going to see in your massive toy store, and really ugly carpeting: this is one authentic game store. A perfect stop during your last-minute, holiday shopping rush.

There's not much of the Dragon Tattoo Collection left at H&M on 34th and Seventh, but it doesn't matter. Go get what you can, the leftovers are freaking cute. The collection is in Divided on the first floor.

Yeah, I'm kicking myself for not trying on the entire collection sooner. Stick to the H&M on Seventh for the above, as the Herald Square store just has two tops. The leather motorcycle jacket pictured is the last one on the floor as of today. It's a size 9 and it's badass. Also, the jeans with holes are made of the softest cotton I've felt in jeans perhaps EVER. I would buy them if I didn't already have 5 pairs of black jeans.

The Elusive Ugly Holiday Sweater (and How to Win a Pair of Southwest Airline Tickets)

Our 34th Street correspondent Sarah stalks the city's vintage stores for ugly holiday sweaters after striking out on 34th Street. The ugly holiday sweater is now hard-to-find and is going for a premium in vintage stores. I blame all the Ugly Holiday Sweater Parties, like the one our sister company, Bryant Park, is having tomorrow night: Show up in your ugly holiday sweater at Southwest Porch, pose for a photo, and beg all your friends to vote for you on the Bryant Park Facebook page. The photo with the most votes wins a pair of tickets on Southwest Airlines.

Kmart and JCPenney had a few options online, but none on 34th Street (and this awesome godawful vest is sold out). Obviously, we're a little too high-brow for holiday ugliness. But designers should start thinking now about a line of ugly holiday sweaters for next year, as they are getting harder and harder to come by. I'll let Sarah take it from here...

In anticipation for our Ugly Holiday Sweater Party tomorrow night at Southwest Porch, I trekked across hipster fashion central of Manhattan, the East Village, after striking out in 34th Street. Only afterwards did I realize thrift shopping in EV is a Catch-22. The East Village has the best concentration of thrift stores because of its vintage-loving inhabitants, so unfortunately most of them are sold out of those elusive sweaters.

My first stop was No Relations Vintage. The selection is slightly better for men than women, but the prices are extremely reasonable all around. I managed to find a delightful “ugly” hat with the fullest pompom I’ve ever seen! I tucked it away in my basket right away even if it doesn’t fit my head. I didn’t have much luck with the sweater rack, but found a monstrous holiday-jacket on the coat rack.

Buffalo Exchange on 11th Street was the next stop. This is one of the busiest thrift stores I’ve been in, rivaling H&M crowds on 34th street. Thus, as expected, I did not manage to find any ugly holiday sweaters. I got distracted from my mission and scored an American Apparel nude blouse and a silk jumpsuit for a total of $50 bucks.

I headed back east to Second Avenue thrift store, where they had a huge selection of clothing; alas they were also sold out of ugly holiday sweaters. At Salvation Army I finally scored some festive scarves and a cheap holiday sweater that had a decent amount of ugly.

Back in the office, my colleague Kati showed me her loot, which includes hideous snowman sweater and a gloves sweater both with sequins! She snagged those at Monk Thrift Shop, where ugly sweaters are going for up to $100 dollars!

We’ve ended up with a pretty great selection of sweaters for the party, but I’ve definitely learned my lesson here. Ugly sweater parties are definitely the most popular party concept in Manhattan this year, and next year I will start shopping for hideous holiday sweaters in July.

Be sure to drop by the party tomorrow night from 6-8pm! There will be holiday drinks for $5 and a lot of ridiculous holiday props.

From the Archives: Crosswalk in the Sky

West 32nd Street is hectic to say the least. Since it isn't on my daily commute, I usually only go to buy some inexpensive stuff that I "need" at Jacks, eat something amazing in Koreatown, and also to stare at the Gimbels Traverse, sometimes also referred to as the Gimbels Skybridge, a relic of retail history and architecture that focused on aesthetics and function.

This Art Deco bridge, with its oxidized copper cladding makes me happy as I try to navigate the insane pedestrian traffic on 32nd Street. In 1925 the retailer Gimbels bought the Cuyler building at 116 West 32nd Street to use primarily for their administrative offices. Built by the Cuyler Realty Co. in 1911, it sat across the street from the Gimbels flagship store (now Manhattan Mall) at 1275 Broadway. I've posted this picture before, but here is the Cuyler building a year after completion, and thirteen years before the Traverse.

Right after the purchase, Gimbels hired architects Richard Harold (R.H.) Shreve and William Lamb (later to become 2/3 of the Firm Shreve, Lamb & Harmon) to design the three-story passageway with copper cladding to connect the two buildings. (For 34th Street district enthusiasts, this firm also designed the Empire State Building, built in 1930-1931, and 1250 Broadway, built in 1967-1968; in our sister BID, Bryant Park, they designed 500 Fifth Avenue, built in 1931.)

The photo below shows West 32nd Street in 1977, including the traverse, the vertical Willoughby's sign (now Jack's), a vertical Gimbels sign, and at the southwest corner The Donald, now The Continental.

See It: Newlyweds

Last night my husband and I attended a private screening of Edward Burns new film Newlyweds, and in Edward Burns fashion it was a total character driven, dead-on depiction of marriage, family, and all that relationship interaction stuff. I gave my husband the knowing eye about 50 times during the film. This movie is greatly entertaining, laugh out loud funny, and gets two thumbs up from me. I give myself four thumbs up for not asking Edward Burns about Christy Turlington during the Q&A.

After the film Mr. Burns himself showed up to talk about the film and the making of with his co-star, Caitlin FitzGerald. Now it's easy to think that writers always write about their own lives, but in truth I think that quickly gets old and they then write about everyone else's lives. Edward Burns confirmed this when I asked him if, like his hero Woody Allen, he was constantly writing down ideas for films even when not working on one. He basically answered yes, then told a story about taking the train to DC and pulling out his laptop to document the conversation of the couple sitting next to him.

Still, Ed Burns is married to Christy Turlington, the world's most amazing supermodel (yes, I came of fashion age in the early '90s). So instead of the Woody Allen question, I really wanted to ask: Does Christy's skin need exfoliating in the morning? Do you have any room in the closet or is Christy taking up all the space? Does she use your razor when her disposable is crapped out? Does the most awesome supermodel living kick you in the shins when you're talking too much at the dinner table?

Oh, the burning, burning desire to know if Christy is just like me us. But I stuck to the topic, because Edward Burns is one of the country's best screenwriters and actors, and I was soon so engrossed in his work and discussion thereof that I hardly indulged in fantasies of me and Christy hanging out, drinking lots of wine, and enjoying a bitchfest about our husbands and sisters. Check out the movie and you'll totally get the reference. Newlyweds is available nationwide On Demand and via Digital Download beginning December 26, 2011, with a select theatrical showing starting in January 2012.

The Real Simple Holiday Store in Bryant Park

Socialista's Open Sky Fun

Last night I traveled south to the Gramercy hood and dropped by delicious new Japanese eatery Kibo for the Socialista "New York Style Sessions" Open Sky event. We all ate, drank, and accessorized before choosing a classic New York city background for our Socialista photo. This all successfully inspired me to finally sign up for Open Sky. It also inspired me to pose in a ferocious crouch.

Here I am, just hanging out, daintily clutching a clutch.

Actually, to be honest, it was the photographer who inspired me. When I stood in front of the green backdrop, he shook his head and said "you're going to have to crouch down or something because you're not going to fit in the shot." I blame it on my Gap platform boots.

I chose the Brooklyn background because I lived there for almost 8 years. And there was no Queens background. I tried explaining to Midtown Girl about Queens being cool, and heavy eye rolling ensued.

More clutching of the clutch. I'm also wearing my H&M's Divided black Sqin jeans (spotted in Herald Square Divided department a few weeks ago), my Joe Fresh wool v-neck, and many accessories as styled by Amy of Midtown Girl, hostess and ruler of Socialista. She said (loosely quoted) "I'm going to accessorize the heck out of you." Perhaps she's tiring of my ~~lazy~~ minimalist aesthetic?

And, not seen here and am kicking self for not getting a full-on outfit shot, is my new Uniqlo +J cropped down coat that got several compliments (GO GET THAT +J BEFORE IT'S GONE, KIDS). So I was, as usual, almost full-on 34th Street last night. There should be some kind of monetary bonus in this for me, yes?!

This is my new coat. I want her eyebrows.

Giambattista Valli at Macy's: On Sale & in the Dressing Room

Yes, the Giambattista Valli for Impulse on 2 in Macy's Herald Square is now 25 % off. I dropped by to try some of it on, and it was all about the dresses.

I call these fantasy dresses, meaning when you try them on you are suddenly living your alternative glamorous life. For example: instead of sitting on the subway wondering how many more pukings Bunny can take before he falls apart in the washer, you are lounging poolside wondering how quickly you can get the waiter fired because he isn't bringing you drinks fast enough.

OK, the fabulous red and black on the left is a skirt and blouse, but the rest are dresses. So many great party options for the holidays, I can't believe any of it is left on the floor. Hurry so you get your size and can treat yourself to some Giambattista Valli fantasy for incredible prices.

From the Archives: Cornices to Curtain Walls on 32nd Street

When I first started working for the 34th Street Partnership, I was going though photos and found this one showing the corner of West 32nd Street and Sixth Avenue, or, 885 Sixth Ave., taken in March 1992.

I recognized it as being an early 1900s building, but with a TON of signage hanging off of it and something weird happening with the cornice along the top, almost as if it had been removed? Yep, 'cause here's what it looked like shortly after being built in 1910 -- less signage and intact cornice.

Fast forward to the 1990s. The ground floor was occupied by Leo's Famous, a hot dog emporium and coffee shop that was at this location since 1941, and closed in 1997.

After finding these photos, I thought I'd walk down to look at the building in person. Too late. I started working for the BID in 2008, found the photo in 2009, and by then, the building was torn down to make room for The Continental, a large residential complex, with coincidentally, the same name as a Christopher Walken SNL character. He's done so many good ones.

Curbed documented the construction of The Continental (also known as Tower 111) quite thoroughly, including a sneak peak at its insides last January. It's central location to transportation hubs, restaurants, and shopping, put residents in the . . Thick. Of. It. with almost everything the City has to offer in a short walk or subway ride away.

+J Uniqlo Sale: Ends Sunday

Spotted Today: Versace for H&M

I'm not sure what you may find at other H&Ms around the city, but this is what they've got at the Penn Station store on 34th Street and Seventh Avenue, second floor. A lot of shoes, a lot of pink bags (and one black) and dresses. I didn't see any leggings, and no black dresses. But there are skirts!

H&M: Marni & the Spring '12 Preview

Heard the news about Marni for H&M? Of course you have! According to Harper's Bazaar, this collaboration is launching March 8th 2012, which isn't a Saturday. But as I told Fashion Pulse last night on Twitter, I'm happy with a weekday launch as that way I can stay home in Queens and sleep in on a Saturday. Haha! Like moms to toddlers ever sleep in. Anyways, I LOVE this collab, what a perfect choice after Versace. I'll definitely be buying some Marni prints. Also this black necklace if it's up for grabs:

Here are a few other H&M things to look forward to in spring. These are from the Spring Press Preview. I'm only supposed to post one photo, but I was feeling very predictable posting the fabulous quilted black biker jacket and felt I had to represent some color. Note the orange-red and cool blue colors. Add some yellow and you're set for spring '12. These hues look very retro and feminine, and the clothing styles follow suit. Also, note the wedges. H&M shoes get better every season.

From the Archives: Finding a Bargain under the Gimbels Traverse

I LOVE dollar stores, especially Jack's. It's chaotic for sure (I have to be in the mood for an adventure), but there are great deals on a huge variety of merchandise. The first Jack's was opened at 16 East 40th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues. In 1994 Jack opened a second store on the first floor of 110 West 32nd Street, between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, and three years later, a closeout retail store called Jack's World, on the 2nd and 3rd floors in the same building. Here is 110 West 32nd Street in 1912 -- it's the middle building with the sexy cornice and Penn Station in the background to the west.

The photo above was taken just after the completion of its neighbor to the west, known then as the Cuyler Building, and later as the Gimbels Administration Building, and even later, as one host to the Gimbels Traverse, or skybridge (more on that later). As for the "Jack's" building -- visible below to the left of the skybridge -- it was probably built in the early 1900s.

According to Walter Grutchfield's extremely informative website on New York City wall signs, 14 to 42, the building was occupied by a company called Alliance Press from about 1907 to 1938, and Protective Ventilator Co. from 1910-1916. In 1916, Willoughby's Camera Stores purchased the building, setting up a much-loved shop on the ground floor. The camera and photography store (one of NYC's oldest) was there until 1994, bringing us full circle to Jack's. Again, 14 to 42 gives a concise history of Willoughby's, so I'm not sure I need to. I can, via the MCNY photo collection, contribute a Willoughby's window from 1945:

Uniqlo +J on Sale

Anne, our archivist and 34th Street building history expert, just dropped by my office to talk sexy cornices and Uniqlo's +J. The sexy cornice post is for later this week. The +J is today because it's on sale right now.

She picked up this impeccable +J cropped peacoat at Uniqlo on 34th Street for $99, reg. priced at $199. DEAL. I'm going by tomorrow to check out the entire stock (regular brand and +J), but it sounds like it's a perfect time to buy some of the +J final collection.
