Fashion Week Day One, Part III: Desigual and Timo Weiland

Desigual

Completely on-brand, this show was a bevy of happy, jaunty models blowing kisses, waving their way down the runway, and making hearts for the photographers. The love was evident in the clothes, too, as is obvious every time a shopper walks into a Desigual (we have two in the 34th Street district). Color, patterns, and fun is in every piece. What came down the runway was similar, but also interspersed throughout with stunning yet slightly more subdued pieces. I always find a great jacket in Desigual (and never pass up checking on the Desigual by Lacroix) and am drawn to their leggings, accessories, and fabulous pants. This show has me particularly anticipating the long dresses that closed the collection.

Timo Weiland

The Highline Hotel setting for the fall presentation of the designers' menswear collection was a perfect match for the casual yet precisely studied and styled ready-to-wear. The dark wood, the portraits of grand dames, the sweeping staircase, all led to a room full of impeccably men dressed in cropped jackets, denim with perfect breaks over boots, and shirts layered so one tail was revealed just so. Think perfect preppy with an appealing urban sensibility. Certainly any of these young men could be found drinking coffee and reading books in the hotel lobby. Ladies, if you can, get your man into Timo and then you can borrow that fabulous long jacket or blue turtleneck sweater.

Fashion Week Day One, Part II : Erin Fetherston, Mark and Estel, and Red Dress Collection

The Erin collection perfectly captured mid-century charm. Each piece was feminine without being cutesy, elaborate without being overdone. With a huge variety of fabrics, textures, and prints used, I was infinitely impressed by how well each dress stood on its own - yet the collection felt cohesive. Mesh gloves with flower appliques and light beading looked too dangerous for day-to-day wear, but were a great addition for the Fashion Week presentation. But let’s focus on my ultimate obsession… the Sienna and Pink Byzantine Jacquard Tiered Dress. This two-tone wonder is my dream, hence the photos from every angle. Enjoy.

The Heart Truth Red Dress Collection fashion show is an annual event hosted by the American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to raise awareness about heart disease. An annual tradition since 2001, the show features celebrities from various fields walking the runway. This year, there an intentional selection of younger women to promote heart health and awareness to encourage early thinking about the health of their heart. While each celebrity on the runway looked gorgeous and confident, some of our favorite looks were Anna Sophia Robb in Alice and Olivia, Victoria Justice in Oscar de la Renta, and Lindsey Vonn in Cynthia Rowley (who came out on crutches after knee surgery!). Other celebrities include Sasha Cohen, Bella Thorne, Giada De Laurentiis, Joan Jett, Nene Leeks and Gina Torres.

Mark and Estel

Designers Mark and Estel assure me that black lace will forever be on trend… when paired with a sweeping velvet wrap dress or floor-length plaid cape. This glam goth collection gave simple cuts an androgynous spin by incorporating leather harnesses, angular shoulders, and leather ‘body armor.’ I can’t say that I loved the models’ high-ankle platforms, but the rest of the styling was on point. Energy ran high throughout the entire show, especially when the designers themselves took to the runway, electric guitar and mics in hand, for a musical end to the show.

Fashion Week Day One, Part I: Nicholas K, BCBG, Jay Godfrey

Nicholas K

 All photos from WWD

This is always a favorite show of mine, although the design duo can sometimes be predictable (urban nomad, layers with scarves and big hoodies), this morning's show was something special. Nicholas K took their usual aesthetic and pushed it to the limit: it was more punk rock, more goth, more drama, and less layered hippie. Which for us = much more honed and fabulous Nicholas K. The design team's inspiration was nautical, as seen with the rubber boots worn throughout and in some of the cable knit fisherman sweaters. But this was tough nautical; think more On the Waterfront than America's Cup. The extreme midriff-baring was seductive, the choppy, angry short black hair was aggressive, and the clothing sat perfectly in-between: urban sexy, rough-and-tumble hotness for the streets, but always chic. Bravo, Nicholas K.

Max and Lubov Azria celebrated the 25th Anniversary of their BCBGMAXAZRIA line with a collection we wish we could have worn off the runway. Long layers, oversized coats, and caftan dresses were perfectly in tune with the Polar Vortex outside, maintaining a casual elegance and balancing it with warmth and practicality. Winter grey and neutral tones were balanced with stripes of bright color. Fur and leather accented everything, from the expected – coats, chunky sweaters and collars, to the unexpected – beaded tulle skirts. Masculine silhouettes were balanced with asymmetrical slits and cut-out dresses.  Highlights included cozy fur mufflers, capes (I’m obsessed with capes and ponchos), and a gorgeous burn out patterned dress.

Godfrey brought a modern edge to 70's rock 'n' roll by combining black leather and lace; deep burgundy, indigo, and black; and glam sequins. My attention was torn between the totally-wearable leather fringe skirt and the man-I-wish-I-had-an-event-to-wear-this-to sequin and mesh gown. Hair was styled with soft waves which was a nice pairing with some of the more structured leather pieces and dark smokey-eyes. The presentation's palette reinforced my impression that wine and black will dominate Fall/Winter 2014 collections, and luckily they are two shades I can never get enough of in my closet.

Crocs: Now on 34th Street

The recently-opened Crocs Herald Square Flagship is adorable. Are you surprised that it's bright, cheery, and fun as heck?
Brightening up a snowy NYC streetscape, left, and the Lady Liberty wall inside, made of kid's Crocs.
Let's take a tour: on the first floor, in addition to the traditional Crocs clogs, you'll find mostly adult styles like skimmers, sneakers and flats.

There are also a few kid's styles on the first level, but the real kid's Crocs fun happens on the second floor, with the eye-catching display of jibbitz charms at the top of the stairs.

I'll admit it, I didn't realize there was a whole industry behind Crocs charms. As a mom of a 4-year-old, I'd like to say OMG.

The Lego Crocs are a total win. Also, it's impossible to not love kid's character Crocs clogs.

It doesn't matter if you can't get that really annoying Dora the Explorer theme song out of your head: the Dora Crocs are irresistible. Even Boots is well represented.

WHO LIVES IN A PINEAPPLE UNDER THE SEA? SPONGE BOB SQUARE PANTS. Best kid's theme song ever? Yes, probably.

Hands down, my #1 favorite, most perfect thing in the store. Yes, Hello Kitty winter boots (#thisismylife). Sorry for the indulgent kid's Crocs divergence. It's just, well, kid's Crocs are so damn cute.

On the less ridiculously bright and adorable side of the second floor, you'll find the Crocs @ work for women and men, and a big selection of flip-flops.

Clearly, Crocs is doing a lot more than just Crocs clogs these days, and the new Herald Square flagship well represents this.
