Ombre! and other stuff...

While searching for something to wear for the video intro, I tried on these at Macy's Herald Square, second floor Broadway side.

INC
Why do I prefer ombre ($59) that goes from light on top to dark on bottom, instead of dark on top to light on bottom? And why do I dislike grinding black peppercorns so much? Unsolved mysteries of my universe. The cuffed shorts are $59, and the purple top is DKNY ($49).

More DKNY
blue knit top ($79), and butterfly gold top ($69) w/faded peg legs ($69), that I really liked at first because of the back pockets...

until I tried on these ABS jeans which so knocked me out I almost asked if Macy's had layaway (they are $189). For one of the first times, I didn't think that almost $200 was ridiculous pricey for jeans. Perfect fit, super long, really soft, and they make me look really good even though they are a size too small. The blue Plastic Island origami top is cute, too ($108).

More mind-boggling ABS
this pencil denim skirt ($155) REALLY wanted to be put on layaway, too (seriously, I have to find out if this still exists). It's sexy, sexy, sexy. Orange, ruffle one-shoulder top is BCBGeneration ($72), and pretty but if your clam stash is low, put the 72 towards the ABS.

Ben Sherman
polka dot blouse (on sale for $47.40) with the hot little ABS number, looking very 1950's, and the YSL homage, $139.

He Was Born That Way

Men, if you have broad shoulders but are slender, and you wear this virtually nonexistent and impossible size called "39R," well, I empathize greatly with you. And ladies, if you are shopping for a man who is "39R," I'm very, very sorry. But I can tell you beleaguered outcasts of the size world exactly where you can find a winter coat.

A brief history: George (39R) needs a winter coat. First stop, the impressive Hugo Boss sample sale at Soiffer Haskin. We almost scored a beautiful coat but it was not for 39R's. We then hit Macy's, first checking out the third floor which 39R said was too "old man." Translate: the third floor is full of wool overcoats all fine for the traditional look, but we needed something more modern. So, down to 2 (I cannot get away from Macy's floor 2) where we found the Ben Sherman corner (ask for the very amiable James from Louisiana). Jackpot. They were so perfect George bought not one, but two coats that fit him just right and look great. Above is the more casual Sherman that's still wearable to the office. This is a classic for a very reasonable $269.

And the money shots: this houndstooth overcoat (right, also $269) is so perfect Ben Sherman! Check out the red lining and the nicely contrasting velvet collar. Also, I love the double pockets. What a coat. Lucky guy, that 39R.

Last Call for Wide Legs and All

Revel in the bounty of The World’s Largest Store. One of the many beauties of the department store experience is selection of style and price. Macy’s Herald Square is a shopping cure-all and the perfect happy ending to our wide leg story. Naturally the jeans options are vast.

Put your blinders on and ignore the purses on the first floor. Ride up the escalator to “Misses Better Sportswear” on two. Yes, “misses,” it’s very retro like hats, matching gloves and shoulder pads. Skip floor three as jeans are scarce, and hit four if you’re shopping for your younger sister, teenage daughter, or can’t resist the warm pretzel aroma.

DKNY on the second floor has a pair of black wide-legs ($128) with a pretty satin waist band and back pocket detail, heavy denim, and a great fit (see left). INC has a pair with super wide legs and a big cuff for $69, but the waist doesn't give much. The Calvin Klein's are unremarkable. Now run to the other (east) side of the second floor and find the new favorite, Level 99. These handcrafted LA jeans have: real wide legs, a strong standout pleat (love the pleat this year), and length to the floor and beyond. Good luck choosing, you may end up with two if you can splurge. Most styles run $118. Get the dark 5 pocket for work (near right) and for the weekend the lighter blue that feel like an old pair of Levi’s and have the cute back pockets (far right). You’ll want to wear them home.

Honorable mention: Joe’s Jeans “Rocker” at Meridian. One of my favorite brands, these jeans are so great you should never let them out of your sight. The “Rocker” is ridiculously long, the fit is superior and they are so comfy you could sleep in them. Visit Meridian soon as they’re on sale for $118 and sizes are limited.
