Updated to add: Fashion Herald's intern Craig checks out the Ralph Lauren sale at Soiffer Haskin.
I've never been to a sample sale. The prospect of crazed women attacking each other in order to squeeze themselves into last season's clothes is enough to give me a panic attack.
I overcame my fear when I descended upon the Ralph Lauren sale at Soiffer Haskin today since an additional 75% markdown was announced. Please excuse my abstract camera angles. I had to utilize my stealth photography techniques mastered from years of watching spy movies (Soiffer Haskin doesn't allow photographs).
The selection is amazing. There is enough range of size and color to make everyone happy. Ralph Lauren is fantastic for office attire, as well as cute pieces that can take you through the evening.
While I was sweating at the mere thought of long sleeves in this unbearable humidity, there is an incredible selection of cashmere sweaters in colors that I have never seen cashmere come in before, like pink, green, and turquoise. Wear at your own risk.

There's also a lot of button-down dress shirts to choose from. As you can see, there are some colors that are only appropriate in an Easter parade.
However, my top pick from this sale has to be the V-neck cashmere dress for just $150 (find it in the back of the room). I think anyone can look fabulous in a long sleeve mini-dress. Besides, who wouldn't want to spend their whole night in 100% cashmere? Unfortunately, I couldn't get a picture of the dress because my clandestine photography methods were compromised. I swiftly left before making a scene.
The sale lasts until 5:00 pm this Friday so get there quick, because I didn't see much stock in the back and I know you all love some discounted Ralph Lauren.

Bally Sale at Soiffer Haskin

Because I live in Brooklyn, it's not often I'm down on 34th Street on the weekend. But Saturday was full of Sonia Rykiel at H&M Herald Square and Bally (prices, left) at Soiffer Haskin at 33rd & 8th, so I had a good Saturday morning tour in the district.
I'll post my Rykiel pictures on Monday, but if you were really interested, you've already been. I'd bet on there still being some of the shoes, perhaps scarves, and maybe a few sweaters in the store tomorrow. Also there was a rack full of the jumpsuits at the Herald Square store and the H&M at 34th & 7th. And if you were coveting the Sonia dolly, it looked like no one was taking her home on Saturday.

It's definitely worth a drop by the Bally sale, too (pics above). I often view these Soiffer Haskin sales as drawing from the older, monied, suburban set. And Bally is no exception. But don't overlook this sale because you think you're too young or not conservative enough. You wouldn't kick any of this stuff out of your closet. There are some gorgeous wedge sandals, spectators, booties, and beautiful flats, and a couple of interesting belt styles ($50-$125) and jackets. I doubt the belts will be around for long, but I'm still going back for the final days when it's all discounted even further. Last day of the sale is Wednesday.
Update on Monday: Further reductions taken today!
Tuesday Update: Last day of the sale is tomorrow. Final markdowns up to 90% off.

Get It on 34th Street

Visit the Soiffer Haskin Mikimoto sale today until 6:30pm, and tomorrow from 9am-4pm. This sale features "exceptional savings" on South Sea and Akoya cultured pearl strands, and an "expanded offering of pearl jewelry embellished with diamonds and other precious gemstones." I'd go just to ogle the strands, but for those of you looking for an unforgettable pearl-something for your future graduate, this may be the perfect sale.
I'll end with a little playoffs love:

Mikimoto Girl
I'm not much of a pearl girl, although I did once receive a necklace and earring set as a gift and thoroughly enjoy them. I like to mix them up a little, old-school Madonna style.
But when it comes to a classic like Mikimoto, I defer to Savvy Girl over at Savvy Mode as she's been dreaming of the Pearls in Motion set for years, and first wrote about them here. She also managed to convince me that pearls can be trendy. Well, Savvy Girl, if you're in NYC this coming week, you must visit this sale at Soiffer Haskin:
Click and make it big.
Call it "an unprecedented employee sale" and I'm intrigued. What do you think, would you visit the Mikimoto sale and invest in an heirloom piece?

Beautiful Words
My sister, in town for business, called and left a message with words I love to hear: "I need to go shopping." This is so much fun as she rarely shops, but when she does, salesclerks everywhere are high-fiving.
Because she needed shoes and can no longer wear heels (tragic!), we visited the Cole Haan sale yesterday at Soiffer Haskin. She left with 4 pairs, all Nike Air fortified, and a gorgeous orange bag. Damage was under $550. If you buy 3 bags or shoes, you get 20% off the highest priced item. Today I returned to check on restock (they may restock again before the last day), and saw some sandals and bags further reduced. Try to avoid lunch hour because the sale will be packed. Reductions go up to 75% off.
Orange bag, because she goes to LA a lot and it's big enough to act like a briefcase. I also forced her out of her brown & black conservative shoebox with the white slings you can see there under the bag.
This classic black bag was an almost, but she prefers either a very small bag, or a huge a** briefcase substitute.
Bag price list. Shoes go down to 50% off.
This thong was $39 on Rue La La today, at Soiffer Haskin it's $19.
My sly sister also got some shopping in the day before, sans moi. Oh, well, have to let her fly solo sometimes. She visited Banana Republic for some work gear, and picked up a light grey summer pant suit ("look, no wrinkles and I was in a meeting all morning!"), and a black and white print dress. If only she'd had this for some 34th Street Banana Republic shopping:
Print it up and take to 34th Street store for 25% off full-priced purchases through Wednesday. You know I'd use it for some jeans, but my sister did also get a beautiful pair of black pants. I love the Banana pant fit.
Soiffer Haskin Cole Haan sale thru Thursday, new reductions daily

34th Street: Free Ice Cream & Sales Galore
First, because it's already begun and I could really use some ice cream right now:
My lame photoshopped email notice.
Go to Haagen-Dazs at 1286 Broadway south of 34th and get a free scoop of any Bee-built ice-cream flavor. Also, go Haagen-Dazs' Help the Honey Bees site and help save a bee. I visit just to "explore the fields," which is a really cute and slightly addictive function.
After enjoying your bee-built ice cream, you can check out Banana Republic on 34th Street because they've got some great promotions now and upcoming:
- 25% off $100 purchase, now through 5/17;
- 9 Free music downloads from never-before heard tracks from Sarah Bareilles, Dashboard Confessional, Liz Phair, Ok Go, David Sanchez, AYO, Tommy Torres Esperanza Spalding and David Garret with any purchase, now through 5/31;
- And next week, the White Hot Sale, involving 30% off regularly priced merchandise, from 5/21-5/25. I know you Banana lovers are way into that!
And speaking of guys, the Joseph Abboud sale at Soiffer-Haskin is now offering a free dress shirt and tie with purchase of any sport coat, while supplies last. Be sure to check out the link for details. If you're not looking for your man, save Soiffer for the Cole Haan sale on the 17th - 21st.
Last is the swim sale at Old Navy. Adult swimwear starts at $12.50 and kids at $8. I have to say, Old Navy swimwear is great for the price. I have tried it on and not been disappointed with the fit.

At Least Once a Year: Paul Stuart
Day Two of the Paul Stuart at Soiffer Haskin, and already the pickings are looking slim for the men. I did manage to pick up this shirt for my guy:
The only non-pastel print in a large ($46.88, 75% off $187.50). I like to get him at least one Paul Stuart shirt a year. He's not very preppy, but on proper occasions looks really cute in Paul Stuart preppy-ish shirts. Hopefully it won't be a horrid color on him.
And I caved and got this silk sweater for $25.40, was $129 (women's is 80% off, most of the men's is 70 - 75% off). There's still a little more stock for women than men.
It didn't look like much to me on the table but I was drawn to its lush creamy hue. And when I tried it on, I fell for the perfect fit. There's just something about these Paul Stuart sweaters that makes you feel all put together, so I try and get one a year for work (perfect for board meetings, interviews, days you go for a more professional look that doesn't involve jeans...). Quality staples are never to be underestimated.
Scarves are square and sadly underwhelming but discounted 95% (about $9). Same for other accessories. There are still some fabulous grandpa caps & hats in men's accessories, all 70% off $128 - $200+. Look for further discounts on the last day, but expect stock to be well picked through. Sale ends Thursday, be sure to go to website for more information.

What's Happening?
Time for a little 34th Street sales & news update:
- Visit a brand new Tourneau sale at Soiffer Haskin this weekend. Usually Tourneau only has one of these a year in September, so take this opportunity to pick up a luxury watch for the new year. Shop early as this sale is heavily attended. All brands sold at Tourneau will be featured except for Patek Phillippe and Rolex. Click or print the image below for more information.
- National Wear Red Day is this Friday, February 6th, but Macy's Wear Red Sale begins today. Get an extra 20% off most regular, sale and clearance purchases when you wear red. Or purchase a Red Dress pin for $2 at any register and get the extra savings. Macy's will donate all Red Dress pin proceeds to the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women movement. Sale ends February 8th.
Remember how Florsheim Shoes used to be in the space just north of Herald Square at 1350 Broadway? Well, late this spring guess what's opening up there? Yes, Sovereign Bank. Well it's no Topshop but it is my bank so I will be hitting up their ATM.
- I received an email yesterday asking about Square One Shoes in Manhattan Mall, where "everything was dirt cheap and you could find an okay shoe for the quality - great for the price...$15 and under." I couldn't say it better than my emailer. Square One had every style imaginable for pittances. However, due to JCPenney construction Square One has been closed. Late March or early April the store will reopen on Level 2. Go here for the Manhattan Mall directory which is diligently and regularly updated.
More 34th Street retail news to come as soon as I'm allowed to share!

Favorites: 2008
Enough with this 2008 blogging! Well, except for some circa 2008 34th Street favorites:
Shoes:
My Nike lo dunks and sun-burst Converse, both from Foot Locker; my wooden Gap Pierre Hardy platforms, with many apologies to my downstairs neighbors; the navy GeeWaWa's I just got on sale at Daffy's for $24.99; and my yellow rainboots from Macy's that allow me to walk straight through major curb puddles.
Jeans:
paper denim cloth from Strawberry, the blues are a perfect straight peg-legged jean; and the Radcliffe's from Daffy's Herald Square, the brown are great for work and the blacks are so soft I wear them as often as possible.
Shirts/Blouses/Sweaters:
My purple Celia Birtwell from Express blouse (tres boho chic!); the polka dot CdG for H&M cardigan; my Chaiken sweater from Daffy's which I bought end of '07 but didn't officially wear till '08; and my green Paul Stuart sweater bought at a Soiffer Haskin sale.
Dress:
This Paramita sample dress from Daffy's that received a compliment from a very chic older woman when I wore it to a charity function (those are the best kinds of compliments).
Etc:
Bitten gold headband that oddly looks good with everything, hides my roots and doesn't give me a headache; my Fiberwig mascara from Sephora that still doesn't shed or give me panda/raccoon/koala eyes; and beloved Paul Stuart scarf also from sale.
It's going to be a challenging retail year, this 2009. But I'm feeling up for it, aren't you? I think hunkering down, dodging bullets like credit card debt and overflowing dresser drawers is not necessarily a bad thing. And look, I was making a concerted effort last year to not spend a lot of money. The most expensive thing on the above list were the Pierre Hardy platforms that cost, as I recall, around $120. So here I will do my little plug thing: keep the faith and shop 34th Street in '09! Enjoy your new year's weekend.

A quick note to remind everyone of the last day of the Max Mara sale at Soiffer Haskin. Everything has been reduced 25%. Why go? Max Mara = stylish, classy & quality clothing. Recent grads, this is your great interview suit resource.
Also, while in the neighborhood drop by Greeley Square today to meet the new cast of HGTV's Design Star III. They'll be there till 3pm.

Sheets & T's
It's the last day of the Pratesi sale at Soiffer Haskin. I've never gone to this one but today I'm dropping by, hoping to pick up some new sheets. I want "sistermom" sheets: the kind that make me realize what crap my sheets are whenever I sleep over at their homes. Hopefully there are some still in stock. I'll report back if it's any good.
Also, think about freshening up some other cotton things. My t-shirts all look raggedy, and I'm not the type to spend $50+ on a T, so I bought some at Forever 21. These are very thin, the see-through variety, but I don't mind that for layering. They are also long and silly inexpensive ($4.80 for short-sleeves, $5.80 for long-sleeves). Go right as you enter on the first floor, they're on the wall and come in several colors.

Friday Notes
A little email from Soiffer Haskin this morning reminded me of the last day of the Paul Stuart sale, with "Final Reductions!" I'm dropping by to pick up some shirts if there are any left. I wonder, if you go to the sale at the last hour, say 4:45pm today, do they discount everything 99.9% off 15 minutes before it ends so they don't have to ship it all to a Filene's Basement in North Dakota? What fun, I'd grab armfuls of preppy gear.
And I'm happy to report my Gap Pierre Hardy shoes passed the "Take Them Out of the Box at Home and Try Them On" test. They got an A+ from the husband and my closet mirror fully agreed. No second doubts about these shoes; I was even tempted to wear them today. There will be more reviews when they are taken to the street for the sidewalk/subway test.

Paul Stuart Update: Preppy Galore
This sale proves those Preppy Handbook types still live, breathe and love a bargain. So if you want a scarf, belt, or classic Paul Stuart "logo" cap ($26.85) get to Soiffer Haskin now.
Accessories are quickly disappearing. The woman's sweaters, too, are getting picked through, but there's lots of shirts.
Why shop preppy? Um, classic is hot. Paul Stuart shirts are fitted till they're sexy. And you need a little belted prep to wear on top of your highwaisted jeans, shorts, and skirts for spring and fall. Be sure to try them on, because, as one elderly lady explained to me as she snatched up my medium shirt, "They're all sized differently, dear."
How much? Men are 70% off, women 75%. For example, women's wool and silk scarves are originally $190+, and cashmere sweaters $230+, so you may be paying under $60 for these. There are also racks of separates, most priced $500 and way up before the discount. Need a beautiful classic trench coat? This is your sale; you'll spend in the low hundreds as the original trench prices are over $1,000. See, kids, without math you'll be lost at sample sales.

Tuesday Miscellany
-- Visit Soiffer Haskin today and tomorrow for the Krizia/Stuart Weitzman sample sales. If you buy two or more Stuart Weitzman shoes you'll get an additional 10% off, and Krizia is now 85-90% off retail. Here's a couple of Krizia spring 2008's:
I either didn't like this collection or couldn't get over the knee socks with everything.
I'm checking out the sale this morning. Now if they have this kittycat bag from spring '07...
-- The Aeropostale in Manhattan Mall still has coupons for the Teens for Jeans campaign. Donate your "gently worn" jeans at the store (they'll go to local teen homeless shelters) and get a coupon for 20% off your next Aeropostale jeans purchase. The store said they should have enough coupons for another week.
-- Quote from February Vogue's "Overheard," p. 136:
"Gap and Pierre Hardy launch a much-anticipated line of summer sandals, wedges, and flats, next month - welcome news to shoe savants who now don't have to make the trip abroad or solicit expat friends to grab a pair, as they might have done when the shoe designer's debut collaborative collection flew off French and U.K. shelves last fall."So next month means March? I'm putting money on them being on 34th Street just before March. Mr. Hardy's summer '08 collection shoes are now on his site, like these...

-- A favorite piece from the Raf Simons fall 08:

If I could afford it I'd buy this all for my man and then borrow it. My ideal daywear is ambisexual - maybe as an OWC (one wardrobe couple) we could afford some Raf Simons. Who in the district would pick up on this jacket? Zara, perhaps? Also note Mr. Simons' creeper inspired shoes throughout the video. Everyone pat yourself on the back for not throwing away leopard print creepers from the 90's.

Hold Them Up
There is a bright side to the incessant rain we're enduring this holiday week: inclement weather=opportunity to accessorize in exciting new ways. A great example is the umbrella holster Jeffrey showed me last week:

I admit that before he tried this on, I feared "cell phone belt-clip syndrome," which occurs when something handy yet horrible looking is appropriated on the street. Luckily, guys, this holster is practical and sexy. It looks good from every angle. Jeffrey got this Totes umbrella ($25) at Macy's Herald Square.
And because the weather isn't so great, there might not be such a crush at the last day of the Gianfranco Ferre sample sale at Soiffer Haskin. Prices will be way reduced as it's last call for Ferre at non-Ferre prices.

He Was Born That Way
Men, if you have broad shoulders but are slender, and you wear this virtually nonexistent and impossible size called "39R," well, I empathize greatly with you. And ladies, if you are shopping for a man who is "39R," I'm very, very sorry. But I can tell you beleaguered outcasts of the size world exactly where you can find a winter coat.
A brief history: George (39R) needs a winter coat. First stop, the impressive Hugo Boss sample sale at Soiffer Haskin.
We almost scored a beautiful coat but it was not for 39R's. We then hit Macy's, first checking out the third floor which 39R said was too "old man." Translate: the third floor is full of wool overcoats all fine for the traditional look, but we needed something more modern. So, down to 2 (I cannot get away from Macy's floor 2) where we found the Ben Sherman corner (ask for the very amiable James from Louisiana). Jackpot. They were so perfect George bought not one, but two coats that fit him just right and look great. Above is the more casual Sherman that's still wearable to the office. This is a classic for a very reasonable $269.
And the money shots: this houndstooth overcoat (right, also $269) is so perfect Ben Sherman! Check out the red lining and the nicely contrasting velvet collar. Also, I love the double pockets. What a coat. Lucky guy, that 39R.

Sample Civilly
Soiffer Haskin is the home to the civilized sample sale. I mean, they have dressing rooms which completely eliminates shamelessly stripping amongst strangers (say that 5 times in a row). Oh, well, you can still get a good deal. And I’m sure if you try hard enough (grab, snatch, push), someone will wrestle you for that sweater you just yanked out of their hands. Otherwise, it’s just too easy. Upcoming sales:
Bonpoint, stylish kid's clothing (newborn to preteen), the summer and winter collection. So you'll stop crying when they spitup on their $100 overalls.
Tuesday, Oct. 23 - Friday, Oct. 26. Tu - Th, 9a - 6:30pm, Friday 9a - 5pm.
No strollers, looks like kids have to be allowed to this one, and credit only. All sales are final.
Hickey Freeman, Bobby Jones, men's clothing, furnishings (manly accessories), & sportswear. Pick up a shirt for yourself while you're fixing up your man. Love a man's shirt. Sunday, Oct. 28 - Thursday, Nov. 1. Sunday 9a - 6pm, M - Wed, 9a - 6:30pm, Thu. 9a - 5pm.
No strollers, and no kids under 12yr. allowed. All sales are final.
It's just barely not in our district, but it's close and a good excuse to visit 34th Street. And I bet they don’t have dressing rooms. Break out that body stocking!
Chaiken, luxury coats, pants and sweaters. Indulge yourself.
Tuesday, Oct. 23 - Friday, Oct. 26. Tu. 10a - 7pm, Wed. 10a - 6pm, Th. 10a - 7pm, Fri. 10a - 6pm. 261 W. 36th St, between 7th & 8th Ave, 2nd floor.
Also:
MARIAH ALERT!!
I'm writing this all in purple as Macy's Herald Square is rolling out the purple carpet for Mariah and her new fragrance, "M" by Mariah Carey. It's purple, it smells purple, and she's going to be appearing (in purple, I'm sure) at Macy's today from 5 - 7pm. The VIP tickets are sold out, but you can buy a $130 gift set and get a ticket for an autograph from the diva herself. I hope you like a "light, sensual" fragrance made with Moroccan incense, Living Tahitia Tiare, and toasted marshmallows. Mmmm, isn't it lunch time?
