Emerson Spring 2014

Jackie Fraser-Swan is a designer that has come a long way from her first presentation at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Spring 2012. However, as a developing designer, sometimes I find that she incorporates too many elements in a collection. I want to quote Coco Chanel's "Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory," only in this case, remove one trend.

Solid purple contributed to the success of some of Fraser-Swan's strongest looks. I loved the top look, the Katy, with ivy-patterned, lazer-cut leather balancing a full chiffon skirt dappled with ivy leaves. As a leather jacket, detailed sheer dress, or cocktail dress, this ivy pattern was stunning. The headpieces were not so striking.

For much of the rest of the line, it was difficult to not view Emerson as a junior collection, not surprising considering her inspiration of a garden party crashed by punk rock kids. From her choice of patterns to the cuts, the styling, and choice of models, it had a very youthful feel. The neon shoes also said "punk rock kid," but struck me as awkward in the collection as a whole.

The designer focused on custom design prints, and when delivered right, revealed her great potential. Fraser-Swan's Garden Gate pattern brought a pop of neon floral to spring. Hand-painted zebra and houndstooth prints with fine tailoring could and did make a rocking jumpsuit. Her favorite flower, Allium, made a whimsical fun graphic pattern, but didn't need to be echoed in a large headpiece.

Overall, there are many bright points in the Emerson collection, and when fine-tuned in seasons to come, will prove Jackie Fraser Swan can absolutely get it right.

Emerson Fall 2013

Jackie Fraser Swan is a designer that continually improves with time. Her line Emerson focuses on using a limited group of patterns and working them into multiple pieces. While her silhouettes aren't ground breaking, Swan manages to create mass appeal for the casual trendsetter.

This season, we saw a lot of her purple and yellow plaid design. It looks great as a shirt dress or sheer blouse with color blocked leather pants, but awkward hanging off the side of a LBD.

I'm constantly on the look for the perfect fall motorcycle leather jacket, but thought this boxy one missed the mark, needing a pinch at the waist.

One piece absolutely made me shake my head. The three dominating patterns of her fall collection looked haphazardly thrown together for the look below. Its an ill-fitting blend of contrasting patterns that looked like two halved dresses sewn together, topped with a poorly tailored blazer.

Ms. Swan did redeem herself by closing her show with three strong gowns. This black number fit like a dream and captures light and movement beautifully down the runway with its alternating black matte and metallic fabrics. Her two one shouldered gowns also looked great while bringing luxury to casual fabrics and patterns.

Highlight: the designer walking down the runway with two of her daughters, dressed in her trademark plaid pattern. Will we be seeing a kids collection in the future?

Emerson Spring '13 Collection

Intern LCogs observes the Emerson Spring 2013 collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week...

The feeling at Emerson's Spring 2013 collection? Edgy tomboy elegance. Dark multi-colored prints, full length gowns, and braided up-dos owned the runway. The show made me think 'punk goes prom,' thanks to the added touches of hard-edge styling and the balloon towers with confetti.

I loved the different necklines of each gown, especially the babydoll top and deep v-neck.

I wasn't a big fan of the tights that accompanied most of the ensembles, although they coordinated well with the overall look and feel of the show.

Emerson Fall 2012

Below, Nancy covers Emerson and ruminates on purple.

Will purple be a big color for Fall 2012? The plethora of looks in this hue seen on Emerson's runway would certainly lead you to think so.

Emerson uses this rich dark purple best in jacket form, and I'm loving these last 2 looks. In metallic form, it looks great paired the yellow dress above, and sophisticated as a long quilted jacket over lacy stockings.

Personally, I thought the presence of enormous buttons downgraded and cheapened these looks, but without them they would definitely be missing something.

A cute simple dress with a cozy cardigan works well for the fall, but for a bolder look do the lace maxi with thigh-high slit and a standout jacket. The extra pop of lime in the hood gives a touch of color the winter wardrobe always needs but usually lacks.
