Fashion Week Day Four, Part II: Katya Zol, Tracy Reese, and Parkchoonmoo

Katya Zol

Perhaps the best show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, new Mongolian designer, Katya Zol produced a truly memorable presentation. Opening with a tribal singer and an impressive acrobat defying gravity, both donned in elaborate traditional coats,  Zol demonstrated the beauty and strength of her culture that served as her inspiration. Models displayed a warrior-like and dramatic gold streak painted down their faces, enhancing a tribal influence. Fine cashmere, raw furs, and leather in warm earth tones harmonized brilliantly in a collection that played with textures and shapes. There were too many great pieces to highlight in this collection, but standouts included a stunning baby blue fur coat, a hooded cashmere cape, dramatically cut dresses with body jewelry, a cobalt blue and gray wrap dress, a copper metal armor coat over a leather jumpsuit, and a black, lazer-cut leather harness over a turtleneck.

Tracy Reese

Tracy Reese brought pretty/lovely and modern/functional to the same stage for Fall 2014. Some pieces were quite literally inspired by woodland scenes and muted florals, while others had more structured silhouettes and geometric patterns. Highlights included the variety of footwear on the runway (gold metallic boots are fantastic in any context), flattering V-seams on her 1950’s-style dresses, and leather accents on outerwear. Say hello this fall to the put-together and feminine girl-on-the go.

For the 25th anniversary of Parkchoonmoo, Demi Park revisited some of her signature elements from previous collections. Cited to be influenced by Cubism, Park's fall line is dramatically angular, boxy, and geometrically shaped. There was minimal use of color and pattern, which allowed the viewer to hone in on the industrial structure of her pieces. Beautifully tailored, oversized coats in heavy fabrics featured exposed seams and a raw, avant-garde feel, while hair tucked into exaggerated turtlenecks, purple ombre lips, and knee high boots perfectly finished Park's exceptional and striking looks.
