Custo Barcelona Spring 2014

Custo Barcelona wove strong geometric patterns, shimmering metallics, and delicate transparencies into his looks for Spring 2014. Innerwear and swimwear were paired with heavier pieces, and were gently revealed to showcase the intricacy of Barcelona’s designs.

My eye was pulled most to the runway’s outerwear which had dynamic coloring, seamlessly integrated patterns, and flattering cuts. Each was a showstopper in their own right.
Custo has inspired me to up-the-ante with my style this spring, to spice up each look instead of relying on white button downs and black pencil skirts. When in doubt, I’ll throw in a gold visor for good measure.

Venexiana Spring 2014

  10

Design process, a la Venexiana's Kati Stern: pick fabrics, blast punk music, and let the creativity flow. Show-goers certainly witnessed that touch of punk glamour in her pieces at her Spring 2014 show. Metallic beading and crystallized gowns dramatically hugging each curve are not meant for wallflowers. These are gowns that command attention and exude confidence.

Powder blue was a prominent color on the runway, as were large, floral-printed, silk gowns, that truly brought the essence of spring to the runway. Stern masterfully displayed drapery and fluidity in a light and airy way.

Lace overlays on classic cuts had a vintage beauty to them.

One complaint: every season, Kati Stern presents an overwhelming collection of over 70 glamorous gowns. This season had me feeling deju vu, bringing me back to her Spring '13 runway presentation. From very similar styling, with double sided chignons (last spring they were twisted, this time braided) and seductive, heavily winged eyes, to seeing many of the same cuts on the gowns. A bit of editing for next season could refine the presentation by eliminating repetitive fillers, and focusing the collection. Otherwise, Venexiana for spring brought the rock-n-roll energy as always.

Black Sail by Nautica Spring 2014

Black Sail by Nautica's designer, Chris Cox, focused on preserving the label's classic all-American look, yet updating it with modern details. The collection is easy to wear with an emphasis on old-fashioned masculinity. Lightweight spring jackets are both stylish and functional for afternoon sailing on luxury yachts. They show off a basic palette of white, gray, and blue hues, with simple clean lines.

Stand out pieces include this pair of tropical printed swimming trunks that will have you lusting for the ocean, and a knit sweater with a subtle sheer pattern.

The highlight of the collection was the cozy knit sweaters. Here's where you'll find a pop of color or a playful geometric pattern, a perfect way to add some personality to your spring wardrobe.
