Here's a photo of the Macy's fireworks. Pretty, yes? And rather smoky, and messy? Which is why we should clear up a common misconception amongst visitors and yes, even some New Yorkers:
The fireworks are not set off at Macy's Herald Square!
Apparently, every year, on the fourth of July, people show up at Herald Square to see the fireworks.
As much as I wish that huge fireworks display was ignited from the roof of Macy's Herald Square, thus exploding all over 34th Street, I must instead recommend that you don an appropriately patriotic outfit like the one shown below and get thee to a rooftop or to the river, where you'll have a great, smoke-free view.
