I did a little shopping on the Y chromosome side of Gap on 34th Street the other day and was reminded of the good old school days when I regularly "borrowed" Dad's cashmere sweaters. Although I did help myself to one of his old leather belts over the holidays, so I guess the good old days live on.
Also, in between rummaging through Dad's closet, I found an old box of my books and re-read Jay McInerney's Story of My Life (1988). I totally forgot that the protagonist party girl Alison Poole would steal her boyfriend's shirts for her daily uniform of men's shirts and leggings. Hmm, not much has changed. Thrown on a boyfriend blazer and you're in the '09. Just please don't sleep with John Edwards, Xmastime can't take much more heartbreak (John Edwards was Xmastime's pres. candidate crush).
From the boy's section of GapKids:
Plaid shirt, $14.99. I was a little obsessed with the hat that day. The green flannel was suspiciously cozy and look at those sleeves. Is that a pajama top? Well, either way I could have bought it.
Striped shirt, $17.99 and brown velvet blazer, best deal for $28.99. That's a boys XXL.
From the men's department:
Fedora, $19.50, blazer, $98, and Italian merino wool sweater, $49.50. Those Gap girl jeans (below right) are the limited edition flares on sale for $27.97. I love them, although they are VERY lo-rise.
I do XL & up for the boy's stuff. The men's blazer is a small and the sweater is a medium. But when I wear a man sweater, I want it to be just big enough so you can kind of tell it's a guy's. I'm a little picky about my men's clothing sizes.

i luv the brown velvet blazer.
sigh.
AND remember how that party girl in the book turned out to be the one that John Edwards had the affair with?!
EXACTLY!! and ruined Xmastime's chance of being in love with the president. personally i think obama's hotter.
I always fancy the idea of wearing boys' stuff. I've done that when I was young.. I should do more! :)
Hi there-the blazer and jumper and plaid shirts look fab, all of mine are mens too!
some girls boorow from boys, some boys borow from girls. great choices. you look wicked in the suit.
i loved john edwards too, until... you know. he just about broke my heart.
that's funny i was doing the exact same thing at target, in the lil boys' section last night. i popped by the gap on 5th ave. and saw the women's section has $15 cableknit sweaters on sale! crazy town!
I only wish I could fit into Gap kids section....
Ack! I've been looking for a brown velvet blazer for ages, for a weirdly specific purpose ... I wonder if I can find that XXL online ...
psh. i wish i could fit into stuff in the kid's section!
sal - let me know if you can't find it and I'll see if it's still down in herald square.
susie - if I can, you can. I've got abnormally long arms and a big back, so i do the boys xl and xxl.
eeps - you and xmastime, heartbroken!
ryder - thanks, i feel very comfortable in menswear!
sharon - i bet, i used to always thrift men's jackets, a total bargain.
songy - yes, you'd look great in it!
savvy - me too.
That book must seem a lot more fascinating now, given recent developments. I'm tempted to re-read it too.
Farren - at gap, the kids stuff is almost a mirror of the men's.
Wendy - i can drop it off for you if you like, it's an amusing quick re-read.
Hahah sometimes I look to take away some of my boyf's clothes too!
Those plaid shirts are great. Cool picks!!
nice outfits :)
Oh right now I'm wearing a plaid men's shirt... and I like it lol
