There's a New Caftan in Town

Um, Ms. Acra? Oscar called and he wants his caftan back. No, seriously, Reem Acra did the prettiest, floatiest caftans that managed to not look like an excuse to pig out at the free buffet. Instead they looked liberating, as in "I am not wearing anything that won't kiss my skin gently and float like butterfly wings round my perfectly toned tanned limbs."

Reem Acra's Spring 2009 show also had some of the richest, bright technicolor hues yet. And now I can finally pin down a major trend for spring 2009: the Greeks. I've seen column wraps, robe-inspired looks and lots of one-shouldered dresses. Ms. Acra's accessories also had a Greek touch, with a profusion of rope belts and shoes with thong toes. The heels even had a sexy cutout that could have been inspired by the thunderbolt of Zeus. Clever.

Although in real life thunderbolt shoes could totally come in handy, and a girl can never have enough rope round the office, all that hanging, flowy movement can be a little worrisome on a windy day or on the subway platform as the train arrives. So shall we embrace the Greek goddess within this spring (most likely she'll go away come fall 2009), and just promise to stay away from revolving doors and the such all next season?

Some non-caftan looks:

My mom wore caftans every weekend morning, and I adore her but am just never able to get over the mom-sociation.

You're right, tho, the colors are astonishing.

your comments are hilarious! i do hope those who embrace their greek goddess will definitely stay away from revolving doors. death by caftan! imagine! hah.

i think i'm going to go the floral route. i just want to look like a bouquet of flowers. with see through clothes on top. these trends are confusing me! i want sheer skirts with biker shorts underneath and a floral top! hahaha.

Oh, the greeks! I like that idea. I did see something along those lines at the Joanna Maistroianni show. The caftans are so seaside chic. Plus they cover your flab :)

Caftans sound fabulous! For someone else. I love the flowing fabrics and colors. One-shoulder? I could do that!

Gorgeous, flowy dresses in vivid colours - love it! The green and yellow ones are my favourites.

Aahh I know, so much flowy goodness on the runway! I think it's more of an overall slouchy, loose silhouette then a Greek thing... :)
