Kaelen Fall 2013

Amanda Wigen covers Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

Kaelen's collection speaks to the girl who is looking to incorporate prints into her wardrobe without losing any edge. Her collage of peonies brought life to the presentation, but with a whisper of femininity rather than a scream. Using the reccuring print in subdued shades of violet and gray, she made florals truly work for fall.

The designer played with layering in a way that was both innovative (violet peonies upon gray peonies, long sleeves upon long sleeves) and inspiring (yes, you can wear that cute beachy purple dress with an enormous shearling parka and make it work).

Quilted metallics were manipulated and conformed to suit the needs of a loose fitting pair of pleated shorts, a zip-up hoodie, and a chic moto vest. Each piece could be mixed with basics for a simple day look or layered with other sheens for a more nighttime feel.

These two looks, by far my favorites, incorporated laser-cut snake print leather. And undoubtedly lasers, snakes, and leather bring button-ups, blazers, and pencil skirts to a whole new level.
