Rafael Cennamo Fall 2013

Amanda Wigen covers Rafael Cennamo at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

Gold metal paillette beading and metallic tulle have this strange and unusual power to make men, women, and all who see it gush like crazy. So it is no surprise that my immediate reaction to the Rafael Cennamo Couture presentation was to gasp and silently say 'WOW' to myself... and I'm still 'WOW'-ing.

Cennamo's presentation, '21 Shades of Gold,' intelligently played with contrasting textures and weights. Intricate beading and fine gold leafing were partnered with physically heavy and voluminous cream cashmere knits. By fearlessly experimenting with materials and embellishment, Cennamo effectively portrays two genres of gowns: The Delicate - airy, ethereal, and glamorous; and The Fierce - strong, luxurious, and magnificent.

In its use of velvet, chantilly lace, fine mesh, and taffeta, the collection redefines traditional sheath, mermaid, and ballgown silhouettes. And the result is breathtaking.

But was my viewing experience slightly hindered due to concern for those 21 models in 7 inch heels? Yes, yes it was.
