Amanda Wigen covers Christian Siriano at New York Fashion Week.
Dramatics never fall short at a Christian Siriano runway show - nor should they, for a designer should never abandon their trademark. But this season, to my surprise, some of Siriano's more restrained looks caught my eye as much as their overtly theatrical counterparts.
The Golden Age of Russian Opera was transported to the New York stage by Siriano's hand, captured in touches of fur, peasant scarf accessories, and golden brocade textiles.
Masterful beading and glimpses of shimmer delivered the performance value demanded by both fashion and opera enthusiasts alike.
But four superbly tailored black dresses were undoubtedly my favorites. They struck a timeless chord in their simplicity, yet looked perfectly modern. The body was molded into hourglass proportions and carefully adorned with scrolling gold embroidery, a high-collar, or a tiered tulle cape.
Congratulations go out to Christian Siriano not only on his Fall 2013 collection, but also on his WWD win for February 9th's Beauty Look of the Day. A sweeping set of dual fishtail braids completed each runway look.
